Gleanings For The Hungry, a ministry of Youth With A Mission (YWAM), runs a seasonal
operation to dry peaches and nectarines during 10 weeks of every summer. Each week during
production, 80 youth and adults volunteer to come and help on the production line with the
preparation and drying of the fruit. Area fruit packers donate tons of "cull"
peaches and nectarines (fruit that can't be sold because it's too small, has a split pit,
or a mark on the skin). After washing, splitting, pitting, cupping, sulphering, and
drying, the fruit is packed into plastic buckets and palletized so it can be sent to the
world's hungry. Most of the fruit is sent to third-world countries where there are no
government aid programs.
Since 1982, Gleanings has sent fruit to Armenia, Baja, Belarus, Bosnia, Cambodian
refugees, Chechnya, Columbia, El Salvador, Georgia, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras,
Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, L. A. earth quake victims, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico,
Moldova, Mongolia, Nicaragua, North Korea, Philippines, Romania, Russia,
Rwanda, South Africa, Siberia, Thailand, U.S. Native Americans, Uganda, Ukraine,
Venezuela, Vietnamese boat people, and U.S. flood victims in Georgia, Minnesota,
Mississippi, North Dakota, Ohio, and Oregon.
During the week the Hope Missions Team was at Gleanings, over 500,000 lbs of fruit was processed for drying and over 47,000 lbs of fruit was packed into containers for shipment!
